University Park Accessible Baths – Costs

The Tub

The first element of the cost of a walk-in tub is, of course, the tub! There are many types of tubs, and many levels of style and features within those types, especially for the spa-type tubs, which may even include an aromatherapy feature, Most big-box home-improvement stores carry a limited selection of walk-in tubs, so you can get some rough ideas there, but there are so many options, and we have a much larger selection of tubs that are likely to be a better fit for your situation. We can say generally that the tub itself will run $2000 to $10000 or more depending on the features:

  • Higher walls for soaking
  • Aerotherapy
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Aromatherapy
  • Foot massage
  • Heated backrest
  • Ozone sterilization
  • Two-seater
  • Shower combo
  • Compact
  • Outward-swinging door (Wheelchair or bariactric tub)
  • Even color can affect the price of the tub.

Costs also vary depending on the tub material:

  • Gelcoat – made of a lightweight polymer with a surface that doesn’t hold up as well as others.
  • Fiberglass – certainly the most familiar material. It holds up better than Gelcoat but is well-known to be prone to scratching.
  • Acrylic – the most durable surface, consisting of acrylic polymers reinforced with fiberglass. The durability comes at a price and is more important at healthcare facility than in a home.

We will help you find the features and surface that fit your needs and budget!

Installation

It’s impossible to give a “ballpark” figure for installion because every situation is unique. Here are some factors that affect installation costs:

  • The features of the tub itself. Tubs that require electrical wiring are more expensive, for example.
  • The location of the bathroom. Moving a tub upstairs is significant effort. What about your doorways? Some tubs are as wide as 35″, compared to 30″ for a standard door frame. Will carpentry be required just to get the tub to the bathroom?
  • The floor plan of the bathroom, including the locations of the water and electric supply lines. If significant carpentry, rewiring, or replumbing is required, this will add to costs.

Can you or your handyman install a walk-in tub? The answer is no. Walk-in tubs are complex systems. The consequences of an installation error can be very serious – much more than the price of the tub and professional installation! A walk-in bathtub should be installed only by a licensed professional plumber with previous experience with walk-ins.

We will give you a clear explanations of your costs and options!

Can I get financial assistance?

There are a few potential sources of funds for your project. All depend on a showing of medical necessity for the project, meaning first of all a doctor’s prescription.

  • Some manufacturers offer military or other discounts or have periodic sales.
  • Medicare is very unlikely to assist you. However, some Medicare Advantage Plans might.
  • Medicaid recipients may be able to receive some help with home modifications.
  • NCOA Benefits Checkup is a good place to visit in your search for assistance.
  • An income-tax deduction may be possible if the tub addresses a documented medical necessity.
